Two distinct research interests relevant to the field Pediatric Infectious Diseases are represented in this program. First, there is a focus on the epidemiology, immunology, and management of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in pregnant women and their neonates. The laboratory component of this research involves defining the humoral and cellular immune responses to HSV in these hosts with attempts to relate these reponses to risk of infection and the development of strategies for prevention. The clinical component of this research involves defining the epidemiology of HSV-2 infections in pregnant women, their spouses, and neonates. The second broad research interest focuses on defining the pharmacokinetics of various antimicrobial agents in neonates, infants, and children.
