The Center has 40 faculty members and 70 postdoctoral fellows who conduct research in more than a dozen laboratories within the Falk Cardiovascular Research Center and other affiliated sites. The scope of research ranges from basic molecular and cellular biology to clinical studies and assessment of healthcare policy. Collaborations also take place with other laboratories within Stanford and in other universities throughout the world. Currently, we are a selected site for the American Heart Association-Bugher Foundation Center for Molecular Biology. We also have an National Institute of Health (NIH) Vascular Academic Award, an NIH Program Project in Vascular Remodeling and two Training Awards in Vascular Biology and Electrophysiology. The Center for Cardiovascular Research houses members of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Additional collaborations with the Program for Molecular and Genetic Medicine (PMGM) and with the Center for Research in Disease Prevention are especially noteworthy.
A faculty member whose academic interests are closely aligned with the research interests of the Spectrum member will provide personal liaison between research in cardiovascular medicine at Stanford and the Spectrum member. The liaison will act a primary contact for the Spectrum member to assist with identification of ongoing research, developing technologies and trainees at Stanford that might be of interest to the member.
Each Spectrum member may choose a liaison related to the company's research interest.
The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine routinely conducts a variety of seminars and conferences throughout the year. Attendance at these educational events will be made available to employees or representatives of the Spectrum member. Members will be placed on a mailing list that will notify them of the following activities. These scientific and clinical updates include the following:
Each year two scientific retreats (of two days duration) are conducted by the Division for Cardiovascular. One of these retreats will focus on recent scientific advances in vascular biology & medicine while the other will change each year. Scientific reports and discussion will involve experts from Stanford and other research institutions from around the world. The vascular retreat is typically held in December; the other retreat is held in late spring of each year. Two representatives from each company will be invited to attend each retreat.
Each week the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine conducts a Research Conference presented by Stanford faculty, fellows or visiting faculty. Emphasis is placed on the presentation of ongoing or recently completed research. Also each week a clinical conference is held to review recent advances in clinical cardiology. This conference uses a case-presentation format. There is no limit to attendance at these conferences and Spectrum members are encouraged to become active participants as presenters.
A monthly meeting at a faculty memberŐs home affords an informal opportunity to discuss implications of recently published scientific articles. Presentations of the material are prepared by the fellows with commentary provided by the faculty. Each Spectrum member is encouraged to send representatives to Journal Club.
Each year a Poster Session is conducted in which the Cardiovascular Medicine fellows present their current research to the entire Center. This evening session is an excellent opportunity to obtain an overview of current research, share a glass of wine, and have personal discussion with the fellows. Spectrum members are invited to send as many representatives as they wish to the Poster Session.
Several times each year the Center conducts major educational conferences for scientists and clinicians. Recent topics included
Coronary Atherosclerosis: The Potential for its Prevention
Regression and its Management
iTissue Renin Angiotensin.
For 1994, conferences are already scheduled on Marfan's Syndrome and Vascular Disease: Fresh Insights and New Strategies.
Two company representatives are invited to attend these activities.
Discussion groups to brain storm specific topics are held once each quarter. These half-day informal discussions will focus on a specific basic science or clinical problems of mutual interest (e.g. restenosis, heart failure, Lp(a), gene therapy, etc.). Discussions will be led by a faculty member and include other Stanford faculty and fellows and Spectrum member representatives. Two representatives from each company are invited to attend two discussion groups per year.
Each Spectrum member can arrange for a visit to a specific laboratory in the Center for Cardiovascular Research to discuss research or clinical issues. These sessions will provide an opportunity to observe first-hand and participate in ongoing research, new techniques or clinical procedures. Spectrum members can arrange visits to labs through their faculty liaison.
The center will provide copies of scientific abstracts, preprints of selected manuscripts, and published manuscripts prepared by the CenterŐs faculty and fellows. Galley proofs and reprints are semt to Spectrum members monthly.
Each Spectrum member is challenged to a softball game against the Cardiovascular All Stars and then to re-live their accomplishments at the annual Holiday Party. This challenge will be issued once per year to all Spectrum members!
