Stanford Magnetic Resonance Laboratory

Message From the Director

SMRL Mission:

The Stanford Magnetic Resonance Laboratory is a research facility within the Stanford School of Medicine. The goal of this facility is to provide research instrumentation and expertise in the area of solution-phase, high resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Instrumentation includes a Varian Inova 800 MHz spectrometer, a Varian 500 MHz spectrometer in my laboratory, state-of-the-art probes for both spectrometers and several computer workstations.

The research focus of the facility is in structure determinations of biological macromolecules.

Current research areas include:
  • Structures of RNA-antibiotic complexes
  • Structures of ribosomal RNA domains
  • HIV reverse transcriptase initiation complex
  • Hepatitis C virus internal ribosome entry site
  • RNA-protein complexes involved in translation
  • Proteins involved in polyketide synthesis
  • Mechanisms of RNA conformational changes
  • NMR methods for structural studies of RNA

Collaborating researchers in other departments at Stanford will be using the facility to study properties of polymers and minerals, and for NMR imaging experiments.

The SMRL facility is available for use by members of the Stanford research community. Please contact us for more information.
