The Best of Both Worlds
At Stanford, our joint admissions program in the biosciences is based on a unique "home program" concept. This means that you may enter the close-knit Department of Biochemistry while still having the opportunity to rotate through several labs during your first year as a graduate student. You can then select your advisor and program based on your experience.
If you share our interest in studying complex cellular processes at a detailed molecular level consider selecting Biochemistry as your "home program".
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Faculty
We are housed in the Beckman Center, a modern research facility outfitted with cutting edge laboratories and equipment.
Our department includes seven members of the National Academy of Sciences and two Nobel Laureates.
Community is a priority - the department is known for a cooperative and collegial environment that encourages frequent and informal communication.
A Personalized Program That Prepares Students for Productive Careers
Students work with their advisor to create a course of study that is tailored to their background and interests.
In addition to a Ph.D. dissertation based on original research students complete six advanced courses in biochemistry and related areas, submit two research proposals and one journal club presentation, participate in the department's seminar club, and are encouraged to attend and to present papers at regional and national meetings.
Teaching experience is an integral part of the Ph.D. curriculum and is required for the degree.
We invite you to review our faculty interests and, if several members of our department are working in areas that match your interests, consider making biochemistry your home department.
