Registering a Computer for Ethernet Access (Macintosh Version)

Why Should I register?

You must register your computer for ethernet access. The network in the medical school campus is designed to automatically assign a TCP/IP address to computers based on its hardware identification number using a DHCP server. If you do not register a computer, the DHCP server will not issue the necessary IP address.

You may skip registering a computer if you are moving the computer from one lab to another within Beckman center, and in its original location the computer had satisfactory network performance (this indicates that the computer was previously registered).

Registration Information

Registering is easy. Just answer some simple questions: (required fields have an orange background)

Name:
Your name or the name of the professor running the lab where the computer is located.

Your Email:
An email address where you can be contacted.

Room Location:
Where the computer is located - Beckman Center only - all others will not be processed.

Department Name: Biochemistry
If you are not in the Biochemistry Department, please contact your department's Local Network Administrator or Lab Manager.

Computer Type and Model:
ie. Apple PowerMacintosh G3, Apple Powerbook 5300c

System Software and Version: ie. MacOS 7.5.3, MacOS 8.0

To determine System Software and Version:

Select "About this Computer" (in older system software select "About this Macintosh") from the Apple menu. A window will appear that displays the system software version "MacOS x.x.x".

Hardware Address: .. computer hardware address, ie 0002.a711.04d2

To determine your hardware address on a Macintosh:

If your Macintosh is running MacTCP:

Select "Control Panels" from the Apple menu. Open "MacTCP". You will see this screen:

To view the hardware address, press the "option" key on the keyboard while selecting the icon titled "Ethernet":

In the example above, the hardware address is "0800.07fe.108f". Enter your hardware address in the form above.

To determine your hardware address on a Macintosh:

If your Macintosh is running Open Transport:

Select "TCP/IP" from "Control Panels", located in the Apple menu:

Select "Ethernet" from the pop-up menu to the right of the field "Connect via:" and select "Using DHCP Server" from the pop-up menu to the right of the field titled "Configure:".

Select "Get Info" from the "File" menu.

The hardware address, "0005.0200.b10a", is underlined in red in the above screenshot.

Enter this value in the "Hardware Address" field in the form towards the top of this web page.

If the instructions don't yield a hardware address, verify that the computer is properly plugged in to an ethernet port on the TSO (cabling instructions). You may need to submit a request to activate an ethernet port. Many Macintosh computers don't return a value for hardware address unless they are plugged into an active, working ethernet port.
