Configuring Windows 95/98 for PPP The following are instructions for configuring Windows 95 or 98 to work with the Point-to-Point Protocol used for dialup connections with SUnet. To follow these instructions you should already have a Leland account, the necessary equipment, and Windows software installed on your PC. You may need access to your Windows CD in order to copy some necessary files. |
Configure Windows 95/98 for Use with Your Modem
If your modem was connected and turned on when you first installed Windows this may already have been done for you. To determine if your modem is already configured with Windows 95/98, follow this sequence: select "Start" then "Control Panel". In the Control Panel window select the icon titled "Modem". If Windows already recognizes your modem, you will see it listed in the Modem dialog box. If not, you will immediately be taken into the "Install a New Modem" Wizard that will step you through configuring Windows for use with your modem. Make sure your modem is turned on and connected to your computer before using the Wizard. |
Install Dial-Up Networking
You may have already installed this option during setup, particularly if you installed Windows on a laptop. To see if Dial-Up Networking is installed select "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu and double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. |
This will bring up a dialog box. In this dialog box select the "Windows Setup" tab. Highlight "Communications" and click on the "Details" button.
Make sure Dial-Up Networking is selected and click on the "OK" button. Click on the "OK" button in the new window to make Windows 95/98 install this component on your computer. At this point you may be asked to insert your Windows installation disks or CD-ROM. Do not skip this step. Failing to insert your Windows CD-ROM or diskettes when prompted will stop PPP from working.
This step will do two things: it will add a "Dial-Up Networking" folder to the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and it will add the "Dial-Up Adapter" to your "Network" control panel. |
Add the TCP/IP Protocol to Your Network Control Panel
From the Control Panel window select the "Network" icon. This will bring up a dialog box listing the different networking protocols and adaptors installed on your computer. You should see "Dial-Up Adaptor" as one of the items in this list. If you see an item titled "TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter" skip to the next step, titled Configure TCP/IP Protocol. Otherwise, click on the "Add" button to add a new networking protocol. This will bring up the following dialog box titled "Select Network Component". Double-click on the item called "Protocol". This will bring up a window with two list boxes asking you which protocol to add: |
From the list on the left, select "Microsoft", and on the right, select "TCP/IP". Click the "OK" button to continue. |
Configure TCP/IP Protocol
While still in the Network control panel (you can select the Network control panel again by double-clicking the icon called "Network" in the "Control Panel" folder), double-click the item called "TCP/IP -> Dial-up Adapter". This will bring up a dialog box titled "TCP/IP Properties". |
Select the "IP Address" tab and make sure the radio button "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
Select the "DNS Configuration" tab. Make sure the radio button titled "Enable DNS" is selected. For the "Host:" field, enter "ppp", for the "Domain:" and "Domain Suffix Search Order" enter "stanford.edu". In the field directly under "DNS Server Search Order" enter the following three server numbers, in this order: (Click the "Add" button after typing each server entry) 171.64.7.55 Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. You will be returned to the "Network Properties" control panel. |
Bind the Dial-Up adapter to use only TCP/IP
Highlight the item labeled "Dial-up adapter" and click on the "Properties" button. This will bring up the "Dial-Up Adapter Properties" box: |
Select the "Bindings" tab and make sure that only the box next to "TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter" is is checked. Click on the "OK" button for this dialog box, then click on the "OK" button in the Network Properties dialog box as well.
When prompted, restart your PC so that the changes to the Network control panel take effect. |
Create a Stanford Connection Profile
Double-click on the icon on your desktop labeled "My Computer". Open the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. If Windows doesn't automatically open the "Make New Connection" wizard, double-click the "Make New Connection" icon. The "Make New Connection" wizard should appear: |
In the "Make New Connection" dialog box, change the name field to "Stanford PPP" or something similar.
Click on the "Next >" button. The dialog box will change to allow you to enter the telephone number to dial. |
Enter the number of Stanford's modem pool, 325-1010 (include the area code 650 if you live in another area code) in the boxed provided.
If you are dialing in from on-campus you will need to set your modem "Dialing Properties". The "Dialing Properties" button let you set additional dailing preferences such as a prefix ('9') or suffix (a phone card number, for example, useful if you are dialing long distance). Click "Finish". A new icon called "Stanford PPP" should now appear in your Dial-Up Networking folder. |
Dialing in to SUNet | ||||
Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. In the window that opens, double-click the "Dial-up Networking" folder. In this window, double-click the "Stanford PPP" icon. A "Connect To" dialog box will appear. In the field marked "Username:" enter your SUNet ID (Leland account name), and in the "Password:" field enter your SUNet ID password. Check to see the phone number is correct and press the "Connect" button. You should hear some dialing and screeching while the modem negotiates a connection. Once you are connected, the following box should appear: |
You can now use any of the software that depends on TCP/IP for its connectivity, i.e. Netscape Navigator, Eudora, PC-Leland, WS-FTP, etc.
When you are finished with your session, close the network applications, return to the "Connected To Stanford PPP" dialog box and click on the "Disconnect" button to gracefully terminate your session. |

Getting Additional Help
If you have difficulty with any aspect of getting or using PPP, your best source of help is Stanford's su.computers.dialin newsgroup, the main forum for the exchange of data about PPP and other areas of our dial-in service. You can use this newsgroup to ask and answer questions, tell others of useful solutions you have discovered, and find out about any new or upgraded services being offered. There are many different ways to read and post messages to the newsgroup. An alternate way to submit a query is to send electronic mail messages to su-computers-dialin@news.stanford.edu, which will forward your messages to the newsgroup. As always, include your electronic mail address so responses can, if you wish, be sent directly to you. You can also contact ITSS Customer Assistance via HelpSU for consulting help. For additional help, contact your dormitory's Resident Computer Coordinator (RCC) or your department's Local Network Administrator (LNA). |
