Registering a Computer for Ethernet Access (PC Version)
Why Should I register? | ||||
You must register your computer for ethernet access. The network in the medical school campus is designed to automatically assign a TCP/IP address to computers based on its hardware identification number using a DHCP server. If you do not register a computer, the DHCP server will not issue the necessary IP address. You may skip registering a computer if you are moving the computer from one lab to another within Beckman center, and in its original location the computer had satisfactory network performance (this indicates that the computer was previously registered). |
Registration Information
Name: Your Email: Room Location: Department Name: Biochemistry Computer Type and Model: System Software and Version: ie. Windows 95, Windows NT Computer Name: |
Selecting a name for your computer:
Selecting a name for your computer can assist in making your PC compatible with filesharing and printing on campus. A good name for your computer should be no more than 10 characters long, and could be your email username or the room number where the computer would be located. |
Hardware Address: .. computer hardware address, ie 0002.a711.04d2 |

To determine your hardware address on a PC:
If your PC is running Windows 95/98: Select "Run" from the Start menu. You should see this window: |
Run winipcfg.exe. It should be in your WINDOWS directory. Your twelve-digit Ethernet hardware address is in the Adapter Address field; in the example below, it's 00-20-AF-09-CD-AF. NOTE: if you have multiple network adapters installed, for example, an Ethernet card and Dial-up Networking, you need to select your Ethernet card from the interface pop-up menu (ELNK3 Ethernet Adapter below). |
Type "winipcfg" and press return or click the "OK" button.
This will open a new window titled "IP Configuration": |
In the interface pull-down menu of this window (in the screenshot, this menu lists an item called "ELNK3 Ethernet Adapter"), select the name of your ethernet card. The hardware address is listed as "Adapter Address" within the IP Configuration window. In the screenshot above, the hardware address is listed as "0020.af09.cdaf".
Enter your hardware address in the form above. |
To determine your hardware address on a PC:
If your PC is running Windows NT 4.0: Select "Run" from Start menu: |
Type "winmsd" in the "Open:" field and click the "OK" button.
This will start the Windows NT diagnostics program: |
Select the tab titled "Network" towards the top of the screen and the button called "Transports" at the bottom (these items are already selected in the image above). The hardware address is listed under the column titled "Address"; in the screenshot above the hardware address of the card is "00c0.4f93.a1a2"
Enter this value in the "Hardware Address" field in the form towards the top of this web page. |
