Configuring Your Macintosh for Appletalk The following are instructions for configuring your Macintosh for Appletalk through an ethernet connection at Stanford University (ie, not from an off-campus or modem-based connection). To follow these instructions you should already have Open Transport or MacTCP software configured on your Macintosh computer. Your computer should already be able to read email and surf the WWW using Netscape or Internet Explorer. For directions to configure your Macintosh for Ethernet use look here. You do not need to follow these directions if you will not be sharing a folder located on your Macintosh's hard disk with remote users. Even without following these directions, you will be able to access files on remote Biochemistry deptartment Macintoshes. |

Check Access to the Appletalk Network
Select "Chooser" from the the Apple menu: |
Verify that in the lower-right area of the window the "Active" radio button is selected.
Selecting "Appleshare" from the top left pane of the window and selecting "Med-Biochemistry" from the pane beneath it will provide a list of computers in the Med-Biochemistry zone to the right. In the screenshot above, I have selected the Office Q610 computer in the Med-Biochemistry zone. Pressing the "OK" button will prompt me for a password to connect to a shared folder on that computer. Select this link for directions on sharing folders. Selecting "Laserwriter 8" and "Med-Biochemistry" will display a list of laser printers in the windowpane on the right. |
Make Appletalk Active and Verify the Zone
From the "Control Panels" option in the Apple menu, select the "Appletalk" control panel. |
You may be prompted to "turn appletalk on when closing the window". You should select "Yes" for this option.
For the "Connect Via:" field: Click and hold on the menu, then choose "Ethernet", "Built-in Ethernet", or the name of your ethernet PC Card (only one of these choices will appear per computer).
For the "Current Zone:" field: click and hold on this menu, then choose the zone you would like your computer to appear in (usually "Med-Biochemistry"). You can now choose "Close" from the "File" menu. When prompted to save changes to the current configuration, click on the "Save" button. |
Enable Filesharing on Your Computer
Before you can assign users to shareable folder you need to set your computer to allow users to connect to it. This step is optional if you do not want to allow other Macintosh users to view or place files into a folder on your own computer. If you do not enable filesharing on your Macintosh, it does not show up in the chooser as a file server. |
