There are a number of identified, unresolved issues with Windows 95/98 filesharing and printing at Beckman Center. | |||||
1. | Browsing the Network Neighborhood |
If you are using Windows 95 or 98, you may experience problems connecting to other Windows 95/98 computers on the floor through the network neighborhood. Verify that you have set up network preferences as they are described in PC-Networking before contacting your LNA. |
2. | Printer Browsing |
Windows 95/98 do not support printing to remote subnets. Consequently, you may experience difficulty consistently printing to a desired device. Symptoms include "Printer is Offline" and "Printer not found" errors. |
The Solutions: | |||||
Use Windows NT 4.0. Windows NT provides the capability for capturing printer ports by IP and bypassing authentication measures in non-WINS controlled networks like Beckman. Windows NT browses more consistently with other Windows-based computers than Windows 95 or 98. While a Windows 95/98 machine may be difficult to configure to consistently share with an NT-based PC, an NT machine can easily browse 95/98 PCs. Whenever Windows NT is not a practical solution (such as in laptop computers), invest in a product called PC-MACLAN ($160). This will allow your Windows 95/98 computer to browse the Beckman Center AppleTalk network for unlimited printing and reliable filesharing, even with Apple Macintosh computers. |
