Installing PC-Leland and PC-Samson These pages describe how to install PC-Leland and PC-Samson and configure PC-Leland, PC-Samson, and Eudora for Kerberized connections. PC-Samson is Stanford's own Kerberized telnet client (for logging in to CMGM, using PINE, ELM, or other telnet applications). PC-Leland is a Stanford-specific program to Kerberize password connections. |

Install PC-Leland to enable Kerberos
Download the PC-Leland installer here and select a download location on your local hard drive (a Leland/SUNet ID is required). |
It is strongly recommended that you exit all Windows programs before installing PC-Leland.
Important Note: If you are installing PC-Leland on a computer that has an existing copy of PC-Leland, you must first quit the existing PC-Leland program and then uninstall it via the "Start" menu -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel". Select the icon "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel window. |
To install PC-Leland, double-click on the "pclel_131.exe" icon. If you are installing from a floppy disk, select the "Start" menu -> "Run" -> type "a:setup" -> click the "OK" button. The program will load an "InstallShield Wizard" that will guide you through the installation. Click "Yes" to continue the installation, or "No" if you wish to abort the installation. A "Welcome" screen will appear. You can click "Next" to continue with the installation, or "Cancel" to exit the setup program. A "Readme Information" screen will appear. After reading the information in this screen, click "Next" to continue with the installation: |
The installation program will create a PC-Leland directory on your hard drive. The default location is inside the "Program Files" directory. You can change the destination directory by clicking on the "Browse" button and selecting the desired directory. Click "Back" to review or change information, "Next" to continue with the installation, or "Cancel" to exit the setup program.
The installation program will ask you to select a configuration based on how your computer is connected to the network: |
Select "Always connected" if your computer is always connected to the Stanford network via an office connection or an ISDN connection. This option enables PC-Leland Single Sign-On and Screen Locking via the PC-Leland screen saver.
Select "Not always connected" if your computer is connected to the network using a dial-up modem (e.g., connecting via the modem pool or an Internet Service Provider from home) or your laptop computer is only sometimes connected to the network via an office connection. This option disables Single Sign-On, Required Login, and Screen Locking via the PC-Leland screen saver. Click "OK" to continue with the installation. After clicking the "OK" button, a "Start Copying Files" screen will appear. This screen will show your current setup information. Click "Back" to review or change these settings or click "Next" to install PC-Leland in the directory you have selected. When the installation is complete, a "Setup Complete" window will appear: |
Select the "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" option and click "Finish" to complete PC-Leland's setup and restart your computer. |
Install PC-Samson, the Stanford Telnet Client
The PC-Samson telnet client is unique in that it allows Kerberized logins with Stanford computers. Download the PC-Samson client to a selected directory on your hard drive from this link here (you need a SUNet or Leland ID to access this file). Once the file has finished downloading, double-click the PC-Samson Installer file (called "sam_inst.exe") to start the installer program: |
Click the "Yes" button to enter the installer, then click the "Next" button on the "Welcome" installer screen. You will eventually see a screen similar to this one:
Figure A. |
Click the "Browse" button to select and alternate destination (C:\Program Files\Samson is usually a good choice). Click the "Next" button to continue, then click the "Next" button again to confirm the settings.
After the installation is complete, you will see the following: |
Click the "Finish" button to complete the installation. PC-Samson is now installed in your computer (you can select it from the "Start" menu -> "Programs"). |
Configuring PC-Samson for Kerberized Connnections
You do not need to perform any PC-Samson configuration for Leland telnet sessions. However, you should follow the instructions here for configuring your CMGM account for Kerberized telnet sessions and this link for Kerberizing Eudora. |
